Sleep and healthy aging

What it's studied for

What Epitalon is studied for

Epitalon has a long research history in longevity science, mostly from one group of researchers in Russia. It's promising, early and not yet independently confirmed at scale.

  1. 01

    Melatonin rhythm and sleep

Studies in older animals and small groups of older adults have looked at how Epitalon affects nighttime melatonin, which tends to flatten with age.

  2. 02

    Telomere biology

Lab studies on human cells found Epitalon could switch on telomerase, the enzyme that maintains telomeres, the protective caps on your chromosomes.

  3. 03

    Healthy aging research

Long-running animal studies have looked at markers of aging and lifespan, which is why Epitalon is a staple of longevity protocols.

  4. 04

    Short courses, not every day

Epitalon is typically taken for a short course and then paused for months. Your physician sets the course and how often to repeat it.

The science

How Epitalon works

Your pineal gland, a small gland deep in the brain, sets your body's night-time rhythm by releasing melatonin. Epitalon is modeled on peptides from that gland.

  1. 01

    It's a tiny pineal signal.

Epitalon (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) is a synthetic version of the active peptide in epithalamin, an extract of the pineal gland studied for decades.

  2. 02

It's studied for your nightly rhythm.

Research suggests it may help restore a more youthful pattern of melatonin release, the hormone that signals night to every cell in your body.

  3. 03

    It reaches your chromosomes.

In lab studies, Epitalon activated telomerase in human cells. Whether that translates into meaningful changes in people is still an open question.

What the research says

We summarize the published research as it stands, including what isn't known yet.

Evidence: Preclinical + early human

  1. Lab & animal studies
  2. Early human studies
  3. Large clinical trials

What's been studied

  • Lab studies on telomerase and telomere length in human cells
  • Animal studies on melatonin, markers of aging and lifespan
  • Small human studies in older adults, mostly from a single research group

What we don't know yet

  • No large, independent, controlled human trials yet
  • Whether lab effects on telomeres translate to health benefits in people
  • The best course length, dose and how often to repeat it

Research summaries are for education, not a promise of results. Epitalon is a compounded medication and is not FDA-approved. Your physician will talk you through what to realistically expect.

How it's used

Using Epitalon.

Your physician sets your dose, schedule and how long you take it. Here's what a typical protocol looks like.

Injection

Subcutaneous injection

A small subcutaneous injection under the skin of the belly or thigh, with a fine insulin needle, often in the evening.

Typical protocol

Commonly a short daily course of about two to three weeks, repeated once or twice a year. Your physician sets your course.

In your package

  • Your prescribed peptide, compounded by a licensed US pharmacy
  • Sterile insulin syringes and alcohol prep pads
  • Step-by-step preparation, storage and injection instructions

May be a fit if you're

  • Adults building a longevity routine with a physician
  • People whose sleep has become lighter or more broken with age
  • People who prefer a short course to a daily, ongoing medication

Not a fit if you're

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Active cancer or a history of cancer
  • Under 18
  • Taking sedatives or sleep medication without telling your physician

Not a complete list. Your physician reviews your full health history.

Questions

Good questions.

Straight answers about Epitalon.

How much does it cost?

BPC-157 injections and TB-500 are $149 a month and MOTS-c is $199 a month; pricing for the other peptides will be announced at launch. Peptides aren't available to order yet: join the waitlist and we'll email you when your visit opens. Shipping is free and there's no insurance needed.

Why is Epitalon taken in courses?

Epitalon protocols are typically short courses of a few weeks, repeated once or twice a year, rather than an everyday medication. Your physician sets your course length and when to repeat it.

Is Epitalon FDA-approved?

No. Epitalon is a compounded medication: it's prepared for you, from a prescription, by a licensed US pharmacy. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved, which means the FDA hasn't reviewed them for safety or effectiveness. That's why a licensed physician reviews your health history before anything is prescribed.

Will Epitalon lengthen my telomeres?

We can't promise that. Lab studies found Epitalon activated telomerase in human cells, but there's no strong evidence yet that it lengthens telomeres or extends lifespan in people. We think it's worth being honest about that.

What are the side effects?

Epitalon is generally reported to be well tolerated. Possible side effects include injection-site redness or irritation, drowsiness, headache and vivid dreams. Your physician will check in during your course.

Can I take it with melatonin or sleep medication?

Tell your physician about any melatonin, sleep aid or sedative you take. Your physician will decide whether Epitalon fits alongside them.

How is this different from peptides sold online for "research use only"?

Websites selling peptides "for research use only" aren't pharmacies. There's no prescription, no physician and no assurance of what's actually in the vial. Your peptide is prescribed by a licensed physician after a medical review and prepared by a licensed US compounding pharmacy.

Important safety information

Epitalon safety

Not for use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have active cancer or a history of cancer, or are under 18. Tell your physician about any sleep medication.

Epitalon (epithalon) is a synthetic tetrapeptide. Human research is limited to small studies, mostly from one research group, and long-term safety in people has not been established.

Possible side effects may include: injection-site redness, irritation or bruising, drowsiness, headache, and vivid dreams.

Contraindications: Epitalon may not be appropriate if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding; have an active cancer or a history of cancer (because of its studied effect on telomerase); are under 18; or have a known allergy to any component. Tell your physician if you take melatonin, sleep aids or sedatives.

This therapy should only be used under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider. Tell your physician about every medication and supplement you take.
