What it's studied for

What MOTS-c is studied for

MOTS-c was discovered in 2015 and has quickly become one of the most interesting peptides in metabolism research. Most of the evidence so far comes from animal studies.

  1. 01

    Metabolic flexibility

Animal studies have looked at how MOTS-c helps cells switch between burning sugar and fat, a trait that tends to fade with age and inactivity.

  2. 02

    Insulin sensitivity

In mice fed high-fat diets, MOTS-c has been studied for its effect on insulin resistance and weight gain.

  3. 03

    Exercise capacity

Research in older mice found improvements in physical performance, which is why MOTS-c is sometimes called an exercise mimetic.

  4. 04

    Built for healthy aging

Circulating MOTS-c appears to decline with age and rise with exercise, making it a focus of longevity research.

The science

How MOTS-c works

Most of your DNA lives in the nucleus, but your mitochondria carry a tiny genome of their own. MOTS-c is one of the few peptides it encodes.

  1. 01

It's a signal from your mitochondria.

MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded by mitochondrial DNA. It's one way your cells' power plants communicate with the rest of the body.

  2. 02

It flips a metabolic master switch.

Research suggests MOTS-c activates AMPK, the same energy-sensing pathway that exercise switches on, shifting cells toward using glucose and fat more efficiently.

  3. 03

It speaks to the nucleus under stress.

When cells are under metabolic stress, MOTS-c can move into the nucleus and influence genes involved in stress resistance and metabolism.

What the research says

We summarize the published research as it stands, including what isn't known yet.

Evidence: Preclinical + early human

  1. Lab & animal studies
  2. Early human studies
  3. Large clinical trials

What's been studied

  • Mouse studies on diet-induced weight gain, insulin resistance and physical performance in aging
  • Human studies measuring natural MOTS-c levels with age, exercise and metabolic health
  • Early human trials of a MOTS-c analog (a related, modified molecule)

What we don't know yet

  • No large controlled trials of MOTS-c injections in people yet
  • The best human dose and schedule
  • Long-term safety in people

Research summaries are for education, not a promise of results. MOTS-c is a compounded medication and is not FDA-approved. Your physician will talk you through what to realistically expect.

How it's used

Using MOTS-c.

Your physician sets your dose, schedule and how long you take it. Here's what a typical protocol looks like.

Injection

Subcutaneous injection

A small subcutaneous injection under the skin of the belly or thigh, with a fine insulin needle.

Typical protocol

Protocols commonly use a few injections a week for a set course, often timed around training days. Your physician sets your dose and schedule.

In your package

  • Your prescribed peptide, compounded by a licensed US pharmacy
  • Sterile insulin syringes and alcohol prep pads
  • Step-by-step preparation, storage and injection instructions

May be a fit if you're

  • Adults focused on metabolic health and staying lean as they age
  • People who train regularly and want physician-guided support for energy and capacity
  • People already on a GLP-1 microdose who want to support the metabolic side of healthy aging

Not a fit if you're

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Active cancer
  • Under 18
  • Athletes subject to WADA drug testing

Not a complete list. Your physician reviews your full health history.

Questions

Good questions.

Straight answers about MOTS-c.

How much does it cost?

BPC-157 injections and TB-500 are $149 a month and MOTS-c is $199 a month; pricing for the other peptides will be announced at launch. Peptides aren't available to order yet: join the waitlist and we'll email you when your visit opens. Shipping is free and there's no insurance needed.

Is MOTS-c a weight-loss drug?

No. MOTS-c is studied for metabolic flexibility, insulin sensitivity and exercise capacity, mostly in animals. It isn't a substitute for a GLP-1 medication, nutrition or exercise, and we don't promise weight loss with it.

Is MOTS-c FDA-approved?

No. MOTS-c is a compounded medication: it's prepared for you, from a prescription, by a licensed US pharmacy. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved, which means the FDA hasn't reviewed them for safety or effectiveness. That's why a licensed physician reviews your health history before anything is prescribed.

When should I inject it?

Your physician sets your schedule. Many protocols use a few injections a week, and some time them around training days. Your kit includes step-by-step instructions.

What are the side effects?

Reported side effects are usually mild: injection-site redness or soreness, temporary tiredness, and occasional changes in heart rate or a warm feeling. Tell your physician if you take diabetes medication, because MOTS-c is studied for its effects on blood sugar.

Can I take MOTS-c with a GLP-1?

Some people use both, and your physician will decide whether that's appropriate for you. Tell us about every medication you take, especially anything that lowers blood sugar.

I compete in a tested sport. Can I use it?

MOTS-c is prohibited under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code, in and out of competition. If you're subject to drug testing in your sport, don't use it, and tell your physician during your visit.

How is this different from peptides sold online for "research use only"?

Websites selling peptides "for research use only" aren't pharmacies. There's no prescription, no physician and no assurance of what's actually in the vial. Your peptide is prescribed by a licensed physician after a medical review and prepared by a licensed US compounding pharmacy.

Important safety information

MOTS-c safety

Not for use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have active cancer, or are under 18. Use caution with blood-sugar-lowering medications. Prohibited in WADA-tested sport.

MOTS-c is a synthetic version of a 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide. Research on it is mostly in animals, and long-term safety in people has not been established.

Possible side effects may include: injection-site redness, soreness or bruising, temporary fatigue, a warm or flushed feeling, and changes in heart rate.

Blood sugar: MOTS-c is studied for its effects on glucose metabolism. If you take insulin, a GLP-1 or other diabetes medication, your physician needs to know, and may advise monitoring.

Contraindications: MOTS-c may not be appropriate if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding; have an active cancer; are under 18; or have a known allergy to any component.

Athletes: MOTS-c is not approved for human therapeutic use and is prohibited under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code.

This therapy should only be used under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider. Tell your physician about every medication and supplement you take.
